Senator Bernie Sanders Phone Bank Volunteering

Most of my work for the #Bernie2016 campaign has been social media related. Working as part of a team I manage several platforms within the group. I decided it was time to do some on the ground outreach.

I was checking out events on berniesanders.com when I came across the NH phone back event in Nashua. NH is an early primary state. It is critical in setting expectations in the minds of many who have not yet had the chance to vote as their state primary is still yet to come. Getting out the vote in the Democratic primary in itself is an important and difficult task. So I decided this was a good place to start.

I signed up for the Nashua office event and I attended a webinar training as suggested on the event page.  It appears you can do phone banking two ways. In a group at a physical event, whether campaign hosted or volunteer hosted, or individually via your own resources.

Being a part of a larger group on site phone bank is a lot of fun. You can share your experience good or bad with fellow volunteers. It is also extremely rewarding to be able to see the results of your work tick off in respect to lines on a page which is normally not immediately apparent when social media posting is your normal game.

All in all a very rewarding experience. Find one near you at BernieSanders.com choose events or host one or just sign up for the training at https://go.berniesanders.com/page/content/phonebank.

Have fun and feel rewarded.

READ: at link below - Christian America is an invention: Big business, right-wing politics and the religious lie that still divides us

The devout, God Fearing,  spiritual,  dedicated, reverent, dutiful, righteous preachers in this country are not tied to the BIG Business of religion. They are tied to their flocks. The self-righteous, those that spout their pious ways on TV are selling you something. Preaching is not a TV or radio show unless it is created to make someone rich or powerful. Selling religion to the poor and the elderly through fear mongering or the offer of eternal salvation is as bad as soliciting martyrs to another faith with the promise of harems of virgins for eternity. You can't buy eternal salvation in either of these ways.

Today organized religion is increasingly being used as a stepping stone to politics in the most right wing of circles. The Pope (undeniably a very Christian man)  has denounced the holier than though attitude of most of these preachers as anti-christian. You can not look at the least fortunate among us and say (to someone working 40 to 80 hours a week who might be homeless or without health insurance), it's your own fault you are poor; society does not need to help you, while at the same time saying that the wealthiest among us should not give their fare share to support our society because they have earned their loopholes and then say you are following the teachings of Christ.

Conservatism in politics in the past more often than not was used to represent fiscal conservatism. Currently it is openly social and religious in it's message. You can not pick and choose which laws of the land you will obey and not based on your own particular religious beliefs and suggest that you should be the leader of the entire country and lead the free world.

We have separation of church and state for a reason. To protect the many from the few. This really is a not a left or right position. It is the only position that is acceptable.  This country was created by people fleeing religious persecution and allowing it to creep back into the highest forms of our government is extremely dangerous. There have always been religious charlatans, but religion in the USA in 2015 is to be scrutinized more than ever before.

Congress’s war on the post office

"in the first quarter of this fiscal year, the post office would have made an operational profit, if not for a 75-year healthcare “pre-funding” mandate that applies to no other public or private institution in the United States."

Bernie Sanders is the BIG DRAW...Not the Reality Star

Bernie Sanders is the BIG DRAW...Not the Reality Star

Over the weekend, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) drew a crowd of some 11,000 people to a rally in Phoenix. By comparison, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently drew a crowd of only 4,200 to his rally recent rally in Phoenix, according to the Phoenix Business Journal. But Trump persists in falsely claiming he drew as many as 15,000 people which, even by standards of political exaggeration, would make Pinocchio proud.

Volunteering in New England - Townsend Lions Club - Canoe Race2015

Many people volunteer in many different ways and for many different reasons. Overtime I have given time to physically working retail and inventory management in HFH as well as online doing transcription for the Smithsonian Institute. Additionally, for the last 20 years I have been volunteering in my local community as a Lion. It is one of the most rewarding activities I have ever engaged in. I have my late husband to thank for this as I started volunteering with him long before I became a member.
Everyone has their own skills and can contribute in their own way. My skills are often related to online activities. Having worked at DEC, Compaq and HP for 35 years before retiring helped build those skills and reinforce the ability in that area.
However, Regardless of skill being a Lion exposes you to many different types of activities, some of which you adapt to or are comfortable with and others not as much. You learn a lot about managing activities and events and working with local vendors and businesses, promoting events and managing volunteers.
One of the main charitable events of your year has just concluded on April 18th the club hosted it's 32nd Annual Canoe/Kayak race on the Squanacook River in Townsend MA. It is a challenging course and no matter your age you should not underestimate the task. This year the race was in memory of a man from Townsend who was a loyal participant and a fearless competitor, Andrew Gustafson. He opened up our race by years ago asking us to add a Kayak class so that he did not have to compete with 2 man canoes in his 1 man kayak. We obliged and the class grew. Later as time went on and he was well over 50 he asked us to add a class for Over 50 as we had years before for canoes. We obliged and that class grew. He passed away in May 2014, right after the race had been held and then we realized why we had not seen him in the last couple races. Being able to acknowledge his contribution to his family was a highlight of this years event. It was done along side the awarding of the trophies.
For many years we have gotten support from a local radio club (a MARA chapter ) who volunteers their time to "spot" along the river to insure we have a safe event. We are a small club and without them we would have great difficulty pulling off the day.
Recently in the last couple of years we have had the great luck of a local photographer taking and interest and documenting the event in a way that we have never had before.
With this long horrible winter we had, if you have an interest in canoeing, Lions, beautiful days along the river this is a site for sore eyes.
